Kraft Korner - Pristine Sparkle Earrings 1 - Rice Paper Earrings

White is as complex as simple it seems to be... Both scientifically and artistically too :) It lends itself to any background,it is essential to impart light and effect in paintings, it provides contrast to an otherwise dull work and so on... But a work with only white?  Phew, it is quite challenging!

The challenge this month at Itsy Bitsy dared us to create something using only white(s)... Thankfully, silver can be used too, for bling. Here is the link/inspiration image to the challenge:

Beautiful though the image is, it made me (and i'm sure, other contestents too) rack my brains a bit to come up with something befiiting it.. I love challenges and this one was quite up to its name! I have tried to use different media since I wanted to experiment and learn as much as I could in the process.. And I can vouch that it was unalloyed fun the whole way through :) Well, here are my entries:

1. Rice paper 'Bubble' Earrings

Rice paper 'Bubble' Earrings

To make this, I used wonton sheets.. Yes, the same used for spring roll wrappers :) I first made a hoop using 22 gauge wire, sandpapered it on one side and stuck rice paper pieces (squares covering the entire hoop plus jutting out, to begin with). Then I painted the swirls on the paper using white acrylic paint and over it, silver pearl-metallic acrylic paint. After it dried, I coated both the sides with clear nail polish (my favorite, cheapest sealant i use currently.. do you know of good, affordable sealants for jewellery? If u do so, please tell me through your comments.. it will be really useful). After one coat dried, I applied the second coat. And to create the bubble effect, i dabbed the wet polish uniformly using the bristles of the nail polish brush (on both sides). After drying, i applied the final coat and then cut off the excess paper from the outside of the circle and sanded to give a smooth finish. (I learnt this from a video tutorial online long back but missed bookmarking the link). It took some time with all the drying time between coats - for both sides but was truly worth the patience to finally see the sparkle of light through the bubbles.. Natural bling :)

He has made those with fibrous rice paper and watercolours. I just thought, why not try with wonton sheets and acrylic? just to see the effect :)

  4. Wow EsVee, not only do I LOVE your writing style, your work is so unique and interesting. A challenge should be challenge isn't it! It forces us to think outside the box and in your case, the box is nowhere in sight! I'm so impressed! Thanks so much for playing along ItsyBitsy's Pristine Sparkle Challenge. All the very best!
